Swedish education minister in Qatar to promote cooperation

Doha: Swedish Minister for Higher Education and Research Helene Hellmark Knutsson (pictured) is on a three-day official visit to Qatar.

She is accompanied by a delegation of 21 high-level representatives from Swedish top universities including Karolinska Institute Lund University Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) Chalmers University and presidents of Swedish national agencies for higher education and research.

The visit aims to promote encourage and develop direct cooperation between government agencies institutes universities in Qatar and Sweden in the fields of higher education and research said a statement issued by the Swedish embassy yesterday.

“This is one of the most important official visits from Sweden to Qatar this year” said Ambassador Ewa Polano. “The timing is excellent because there is a big interest in Qatar at the moment to create partnerships with countries like Sweden. The key message from the minister and the Swedish government is ‘could Sweden be a role model for Qatar in the ongoing paradigm shift in the country away from oil and gas towards a knowledge based society where innovation and entrepreneurship are key factors to a continued prosperous future in Qatar?’” Sweden is highly ranked in global indexes on Research and Development Innovation – Entrepreneurship. World Economic Forum ranks Sweden as No. 1 in Creative Economy.’ The delegation is scheduled to visit Qatar University and Qatar Foundation today and meet senior officials.The Peninsula
