Artists covering Sur Port wall with murals depicting Oman's heritage

To attract more visitors to the area and encourage commercial traffic around 50 artists have painted the walls of Sur Port.

The mural paintings were inaugurated by H E Dr Hamad bin Said bin Suleiman al Aufi Undersecretary for fisheries in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries on January 11.

Even after the inauguration artists aim to continue working on painting the port wall hoping to extend the artwork till its far end. According to officials the mural is 1300m long and covers an area of more than 6500sq m. Around 50 artists professional as well as amateur from South Sharqiyah governorate worked to paint the port wall.

The paintings aim to deliver the message that ports are everyone's responsibility and should be maintained well. The paintings depict the heritage of Oman fishing patriotism and celebrate of its natural beauty.

Said al Alawi head of Department of Counselling at the Directorate of Education and technical supervisor for the port wall paintings project who came up with the idea to paint the port wall said 'The objective of the project was to beautify the pedestrian path in the port to give the place a tourist interface with art and to highlight the talents of artists from within the region.'

Alawi told artists at the inauguration of the painting that they should continue their endeavour of self-learning and remain motivated in order to come up with new ideas that contribute to the creative development of Omani society.
