Missing radioactive material found in Iraq- Hlt. Min.


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BAGHDAD Feb 21 (KUNA) -- Radioactive material which went missing for months in the southern Iraqi governorate of Basra has been found the Ministry of Health and Environment announced on Sunday.In a statement to KUNA Iraqi Minister of Health and Environment Adiela Humoud said that the ministry in conjunction with security forces has located the radioactive material in a fuel station in Al-Zubair district."Only after the material is tested will we be able to confirm if it is the same device that had gone missing" she said.According to a ministry document which KUNA had obtained on November 30th of last year highly dangerous radioactive material Iridium-192 was stolen from a storage belonging to US oilfield services company Weatherford WFT.N in Basra governorate.Moreover the document had warned that the material poses a grave threat to security as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has branded it as amongst the most lethal classes of radioactivity.Iraqi oil companies incorporate some radioactive material into their operations and such material is usually handled with caution as it is transported under heavy security.
