A consumption-based tariff has been introduced in the national capital to avoid misuse of energy consumption.

The residents of national capital will be paying more in electricity and water charges as the Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) has hiked its tariff for both expatriates and nationals.

For the expatriate community water charges will jump 77.31 per cent to Dh10.55 per cubic metres (1000 litres) the rise will be Dh5.95 per cubic metre up to the average daily consumption of 5000 litres.

The consumption of up to 20kWh a day of electricity would be billed at 21 fils per kWh and it will rise 51.43 per cent to 31.8 fils if the consumption crosses daily limit of 20 kWh.

Though the new tariff hike is applicable to expatriates the UAE nationals will also have to pay more in electricity and water charges based on daily and monthly consumptions.

The UAE nationals who were allowed to use water free of charge until the beginning of 2015 will now pay Dh1.7 for consuming between 1000 and 7000 litre a day if they are residing in a villa.

For Emiratis owning an apartment the water tariff of Dh1.7 will rise to Dh1.89 once daily consumption limit is crossed. The electric power tariff which was 5 fils for kWh up to 400 kWh per day will rise to 5.5 fils once consumption surpasses 400kWh daily limit.

Hamad Al Awadhi member of the Board of Directors of Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed the new tariff which would discourage over-consumption.

"We would like to highlight that the main objective of these changes is to encourage our valued customers to reconsider their consumption behaviour and contribute for the environment protection efforts for the benefit of the posterity" the distribution company said. However Al Awadhi said when the country start producing nuclear energy from next year the power tariff would go down substantially.

The country's first nuclear power reactor at Baraka in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi is expected to be operational by year-end and would produce 5600megawatt cheap energy in four years to meet the growing energy demands.

ADDC has 412540 water and power consumers in its three regions: Eastern Region comprising Mussaffah and Baniyas; Western Region comprising Liwa Silla and Abu Dhabi Island.
