Morocco: Man Sentenced to 2 Years for Attempted Murder of 2 Tourists


(MENAFN- Morocco World News) A young man from the town of Taounate in northern Morocco was sentenced to two years in prison in Fez for attacking two Eastern European tourists.

The suspect was charged with 'attempted murder with premeditation' of two tourists from Ukraine and Lithuania according Moroccan daily Assabah in its Friday issue.

The Criminal Division of the Fez Court of Appels condemned the suspect last Monday to two years in prison and fine of MAD 1000. The man has criminal record police said.

According to the same source the judicial police in Fez arrested the suspect who had been accused of brutally attacking the Lithuanian tourist in March whom he stabbed repeatedly threatening his life.

The Eastern European victim was taken to the emergency room at Hassan II University Hospital in Fez.

Eyewitnesses' descriptions and sketches enabled the police to locate the suspect whose identity was unknown at the time of the crime due to a physical disguise.

During a police interrogation the suspect confessed that he had assaulted another tourist from Ukraine three months before the first attack.

According to the same source the man attacked the victims out of hatred and resentment.

The suspect claimed that he was an immigrant in Eastern European countries before he returned to his native Morocco and was allegedly mistreated by citizens of those countries.

The assault on the Lithuanian and Ukrainian tourists seems to have been a 'hate crime' based on the sentiments of the attacker and not a random attack against tourists.

Over 4272 criminals were arrested in the city of Fez between October 20thand November 23th 2015 Fez police announced on November 27.
