Jordan AFESD ink 70.6mln soft loans


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman Dec. 28 (Petra) -- Jordan and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) on Monday signed two soft loan agreements worth $70.6 million to implement a number of developmental ventures.

A total of one million dollars will go the Jordan Metrological Department to set-up a weather watch radar to improve the department's weather forecast accuracy.

The Petra district in southern Jordan will also receive $19.7 million through a soft loan to enhance the region's infrastructure.

An amount of $50 million will be used to support small and medium enterprises to further develop this key sector of the economy and generate more employment opportunities.

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury who signed the agreements on behalf of the Jordanian government said he appreciates the Fund's continuous support for Jordan to help it grapple with socio-economic challenges.

He spoke about the Kingdom's economic condition as a result of the Syrian crisis which places a heavy burden on the country's resources.

Abdulatif Al Hamad Director-General and Chairman of the AFESD commended Jordan's efforts to overcome economic challenges especially with regard to the Syrian refugees and reform programmes.

He stressed that AFESD is a true partner for development in Jordan and aspires to have greater developmental role in the future. YK
