Cultural, thematic performances captivate spectators
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Cultural and thematic performances led by hundreds of students from the Philippine and Indian schools highlighted the Qatar National Day (QND) celebrations at Al Rayyan Sports Club on Friday.
After reciting verses from the Holy Qur'an and singing the Qatar National Anthem, the programme proceeded with a National Day parade of young students dressed in colourful costumes.
The thematic shows presented by each group of performers enthralled a large number of spectators from the Indonesian, Philippine and Malaysian expatriate communities.
"The Filipino community feels the celebration to be as if ours and we fully support the Qatar government without reservation in this momentous event," United Filipino Organisation in Qatar vice chairman Ressie S Fos told Gulf Times.
Qatar is considered a second home to around 300,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), known to be the third-largest expatriate community in the country.
Fos said that Qatar and its people continue to provide lots of opportunities to Filipinos like him. Like other expatriates from countries such as India and Nepal, among others, he noted that Filipinos form part of Qatar's various achievements, developments and even challenges.
A number of MoI officials, community leaders, embassy and school officials from participating countries attended the celebrations.
Some of the schools which participated in the thematic shows include the Philippine School of Doha, Ideal Indian School, Philippine International School, Scholars International, and the Shantiniketan Indian School.
Members of various groups from the three expatriate communities also performed on stage with song and dance numbers as part of the cultural shows.
Indonesian ambassador Deddy Saiful Hadi also congratulated Qatar on its National Day saying the event "embodies the ideals and visionary aspirations that this country was founded on and pays homage to the great men and women who participated in building the nation."
Hadi added that Qatar has become a top destination for many international conferences and sport competitions.
Associated QND events at Asian Town (Industrial Area), Wakra Sports Stadium and Barwa Workers' Recreation Complex in Al Khor also hosted a slew of cultural and stage shows, sports competitions and activities organised by MoI.
