Star Wars: Abu Dhabi Awakening

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) NOT TO BE outdone by Tinsel Town, the UAE's capital will be holding its own Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere at Emirates Palace tonight.

Unless you've actually been hauled up on the distant Skywalker homestead of Tatooine for the last few years, you'll be more than aware that portions of the movie were filmed in the Abu Dhabi desert last year.

Doubling for a barren alien landscape, tonight all will be revealed as to how much of the emirate has been captured on film. Although, for the picture to be premiered here before Europe, the capital's contribution must have been substantial.

While unfortunately no leading stars are confirmed to attend (so put your vacuum-packed dolls and memorabilia back in the vault - nothing will get signed tonight), the media company behind the initiative, twofour54, has stated Emirati talent who appear onscreen will walk the red carpet.

Noura Al Kaabi, CEO of twofour54, and Chair of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak (pictured), have also welcomed six Stormtroopers for the event.

Imperial Stormtroopers are soldiers from the Galactic Empire in the film's universe. Touching down in AD yesterday, Stormtroopers from the UK and German garrisons of 501st Legion will join UAE Stormtroopers to greet and mingle with premiere attendees.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the seventh instalment in the franchise and is anticipated to be one of the most successful films of all time. So far, it has smashed all records for advance ticket sales in the United States; as of November 20 ticket sales had surpassed US $50 million.

Tonight's proceedings will kick off at 7pm as guests make their journey inside the five-star hotel, before an 8.30pm tour of the new Jakku experience, an exhibition featuring creatures, props and set pieces from the film. Then, come 9pm or so, it's show time.
