ABU DHABI 22nd November 2015 (WAM) -- The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi EAD and Shell Abu Dhabi have renewed their sponsorship of EAD's Enviro-Spellathon programme for the 15th year in a row which will see the programme continue being offered to hundreds of thousands of students at schools across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Enviro-Spellathon is an award-winning annual environmental education programme that targets pupils from primary and intermediate levels throughout schools in Abu Dhabi. Achieving success since its launch in 2000 the programme is offered in collaboration with the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with World Wide Fund for Nature and with the support of the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

Each year nearly 80-90% of all government and private schools in Abu Dhabi participate in the programme which promotes eco-literacy and instills environmentally-friendly behaviour from a young age as it raises awareness among students about key environmental issues and teaches them about the rich local flora and fauna.

Dr. Jaber Al Jabri EAD's Deputy Secretary-General and Andrew Vaughan Shell Abu Dhabi Chairman signed the sponsorship agreement at Mubarak bin Mohamed School one of the participating schools.

During the last academic year the programme attracted nearly 168000 students from 377 out of 423 schools in Abu Dhabi and EAD distributed over 100000 awards and certificates to students and coordinators of the 377 schools in recognition of their efforts last year.

Dr. Al Jabri said "Since it launched the Enviro-Spellathon programme has seen great success we've attracted nearly 1.6 million students from 98% of the schools across Abu Dhabi. By renewing the partnership we aim to keep the momentum of the programme and attract even more students to take part."
