(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A group 16 top researchers from Sweden are taking part in the 24th World International Traffic Medicine Association (ITMA) Congress. Dr Lars Englund, chief medical officer at Swedish Road and Rail Department is the president of ITMA.
Swedish ambassador Ewa Polano said it is very encouraging to follow the ambitious approach of Qatar to improve road safety. "I am therefore very glad to see how Qatar and Sweden have developed a close dialogue on both Road Safety and Traffic Medicine during the last year. Sweden has a lot to offer, being a global leader in our "Vision Zero".
"We had the power talks in May in Doha, when the vice minister of infrastructure Erik Bromander was heading a big delegation of 25 Swedish road safety experts. Now, this week, Dr Englund and the Swedish delegation on Traffic Medicine bring a lot of know-how to a committed government and audience here in Doha," the envoy added.
The embassy is organising separate bilateral meetings during this week with Qatar University, Qatar Foundation and Hamad Medical Corporation.
During the ITMA pre-congress workshop on Sunday, Dr Hans-Yngve Berg, a senior analyst at the Swedish Road and Rail Department, was part of the 'Health' group while Dr Englund was included in the 'Road Safety' group.
One of Sweden's most successful exports is Road Safety. In 1997 the Swedish parliament adopted a policy known as Vision Zero, an idea that traffic deaths are unacceptable. Today this idea is embraced within the EU, New York City and San Jose.
Sweden has engineered one of the world's lowest traffic-related fatality rates thanks to educational campaigns, new vehicle technology, surveillance systems, and infrastructural innovations, including pedestrian bridges and bike-lane barriers.
