Over 45 per cent of project and infrastructure work has been completed at the Khazzan gas field which is being developed by BP according to the president of BP Oman.

Yousuf al Ojaili in a press statement on Monday said 'Over 45 per cent of project and infrastructure works have been completed at Khazzan so far and there are seven drilling rigs in the field with 12 wells already having been drilled. We continue to invest significantly in Oman despite low oil prices.'

H E Salim al Aufi undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas visited the Khazzan field on October 27 to review progress of the project as BP prepares to deliver the first gas in 2017.

H E Aufi was accompanied by Ojaili and a number of senior Ministry of Oil and Gas Ministry of Finance and Oman Oil officials.

The project is expected to increase Oman's supply of natural gas by a third with 1bn ft3 of natural gas expected to flow from the site every day.

After the visit H E Aufi said 'This visit had been overdue. The Khazzan project is making great progress and the benefit to Oman will be significant once when gas begins to flow by the end of 2017.'

The delegation visited a number of areas on the site including the operational Abraaj rig and the upcoming Central Gas Processing Facility area.

In December 2013 Oman and BP signed a gas sale agreement and an amended production sharing agreement for the development of the Khazzan project in Block 61. BP is the operator of Block 61 and holds a 60 per cent interest with Oman Oil Company for Exploration and Production holding the remaining 40 per cent.

The Khazzan project will involve a drilling programme of around 300 wells over 15 years to deliver plateau production of 1bn ft3 of gas per day. This volume is equivalent to an increase of around a third of Oman's total daily domestic gas supply.
