Jordan- Fraudster posing as utility debt collector nabbed

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Criminal Investigation Division (CID) officers Tuesday arrested a suspect with a record of 81 criminal offenses and who is also wanted by security and judicial authorities on four accounts of fraud, according to the Public Security Department.

It said that a number of people had filed complaints with the CID that they had been defrauded by a person posing as a collector of electricity bills, who received cash, to discover later that the receipts were fake.

It said an investigation led to suspicion of a person with previous records of fraud and theft, who was found with counterfeit vouchers and a receipt book and who had confessed to committing 50 instances of fraud.

"The suspect had used to enter apartment buildings to check the electricity bills with their residents, and that in case a bill's value is high, he would switch off the metre and threaten them of a power cut unless the bill is paid instantly. He will then receive the cash and hand back the receipts", added the statement.

The suspect also confessed to breaking into homes in a number of burglary cases, it said, adding that the investigation is still ongoing.

The CID statement urged citizens for caution and to check the identity of utility companies' workers and immediately call the Command and Control Centre in case of any suspicion.
