Ten migrants drowned trying to reach Greece's Kos

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At least ten people have drowned after a boat carrying illegal migrants to the Greek islands sank in the Aegean Sea on Wednesday, Turkish coast guard has said.

They were sailing to Greece from the Turkish tourist resort of Bodrum, according to the source.

Turkish authorities have launched a rescue operation.

The Bodrum coast is a popular location for migrants trying to reach Kos, being among the shortest routes by sea from Asia to European Union (EU) territory.

In the first five months of 2015, over 42,000 people arrived by sea to Greece, most of them refugees, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.
