Yemeni aid conference held in Istanbul
(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) An international conference in Istanbul on Friday sought to alleviate the suffering of Yemenis caught up in a civil war.
Held under the banner "They are me, I am them", delegates from charities and aid groups gathered for the International Yemen Humanitarian Aid Conference, organized by the Union of NGOs of the Islamic World (UNIW).
Key to discussions was providing long-term aid to Yemen's beleaguered population. The UN says 21 million people - 80 percent of the country's population - require some form of life-saving assistance.
Around 1,900 civilians have died since March, when a Saudi-led Gulf Arab coalition launched attacks on the Shia Houthi militia that ousted President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.
The conference also focused on investing $447 million in areas such as education, health and transport.
Hamid Ziyad , Secretary-General of the Humanitarian Union for Relief, said: "Those who gather today to address the situation in the country of wisdom, for the people of wisdom, the Yemenis, seek your support."
