Suicide car bombing at Baghdad checkpoint kills 6 people

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A suicide attacker blew up his car bomb on Sunday on a crowded square in Baghdad, killing at least six people, police and medical sources said.

The blast on Adan square, near an entrance to the Shiite neighbourhood of Kadhimiyah, came just before the meal that breaks the dawn-to-dusk fast during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

At least 20 people were also wounded in the attack at the square, which was targeted in February and has been frequently hit over the years.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion, but most such attacks are carried out by the Islamic State jihadist group.

There had been fears that IS would intensify attacks in Baghdad during Ramadan, but with the fasting month nearing its end, no surge in bombings has taken place.
