Oman- Ministry of Health plans electronic database on diabetics

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ministry of Health (MoH) is planning to create an electronic database of Omanis with diabetes. Speaking to Muscat Daily a MoH official said 'The idea is to do away with big log books.

The data can be accessed at the click of a button from any healthcare centre or hospital in the country.'

The official said this initiative will help both healthcare providers and patients. 'Through this database time of both patients and healthcare providers will be saved. Patients will not have to spend time filling forms while healthcare providers will not have to go through endless number of papers to access record. All government hospitals and healthcare centres will be able to access a patient's record through this electronic database.'

According to the International Diabetes Federation 1220 adults in Oman aged between 20 and 79 died due to diabetes in 2014 and its prevalence among adults was 8.2 per cent. Altogether there were 220600 cases of diabetes in Oman last year. Diabetes is the leading cause of renal failure blindness amputation and cardiovascular diseases he said adding that several new cases of diabetes are registered in Oman every year.

The ministry has opened the National Diabetes and Endocrine Centre in Bausher near The Royal Hospital to tackle diabetes and conduct research on its prevention. 'Once we have the database in place it will help us in comparing cases easily. It will also aid in treatment of new cases' he said.

'Our aim is to prevent this disease from spreading further. Also we handle a lot of road accident cases. If the healthcare provider knows that the victim is a diabetic he can be treated accordingly. So the advantages are many. Many countries already have such a database. We will join these countries on the list soon.'
