Development of logistics sector to put Oman on global trade map

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's logistics sector has received more attention in recent years given its importance in the promotion of the national economy.

The sector has also utilised the geographical location of the sultanate and infrastructure in the form of ports airports and roads as well as a secure and stable political climate. All these factors have converged to position the country as an emerging logistics hub of strategic global importance.

Oman has developed a strategic plan for the logistics sector as part of the 9th Five-Year Plan (2016-20). The plan will look to build on the achievements of Oman in linking the key trading hubs in the country with Gulf Arab Asian and global markets through the presence of a land-transport network that includes over 32600km of paved roads connecting the various governorates wilayats and villages of the sultanate.

The Logistics Area in South Batinah is one of the areas that will contribute to the development of this sector. According to Ahmed al Azkawi director of the hub the logistics sector is the artery that feeds the other sectors and in this sense the importance of the sector is highlighted in diversifying sources of income directly and indirectly.

In a statement to ONA Azkawi said the indirect approach is represented by activity connecting and supporting shipping storage and cargo-handling operations at the local and international level which results in the creation of new markets for local products and supports the promotion of the sultanate as a promising investment destination in different sectors.

He said the importance of the sector is not limited to itself but extends to the role it plays in supporting other sectors and on this basis the government is focusing on developing the efficiency of transport and logistics systems as they have significant economic dimensions.

The government's approach to promoting logistics is in line with the trend of international firms  and investors searching for advanced logistics centres close to their target markets he said.

Azkawi said the Logistics Area in South Batinah which is being developed by Oman Logistics Co (under incorporation) will complement the projects of the government in strengthening the infrastructure of the logistics sector to meet trade movement and the increasing volume of investment demand in the commercial and industrial sectors.

He said the Logistics Area will cover 95sq km and include four main activities dedicated to logistics commercial activities light industries and public services.
