Dubai - About 13 popular Quran reciters from Arab countries will lead Taraweeh prayers during the Holy Month of Ramadan as part of the third edition of the Quraa Dubai programme.

The 13 imams including Khalifa Al Tunaiji Saad Al Ghamidi Adel Rayan and Dr Yasser Al Dosari will lead the Taraweeh prayers at the Grand Rashidiya Mosque opposite the Dubai International Airport.

The programme was launched two years ago by the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai under the sponsorship of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Thousands of Muslims from across the country flock the mosque to hear the tuneful recitation of the eminent imams during the holy month. Dr Hamad Al Shaibani Director-General IACAD said the third edition of the programme is seeing more Emirati imams than the previous ones. Imams from Saudi Arabia Kuwait Bahrain Yemen and Morocco are also participating. “The 13 imams are to lead people in the Taraweeh prayers mostly for two days each in addition to the Qiyam — or late night prayers — in the blessed last 10 days of Ramadan” said Al Shaibani. Over 10000 people visited the mosque last year he told Khaleej Times. “The number is expected to exceed 15000 this year particularly due to new tents that will be installed for men and women.” Jassim Al Khazraji Deputy Chairman of the Quraa Dubai higher committee said they will instal two separate tents for men and women with a capacity of 1500 worshipers each as well as additional parking spaces.

Dr Omar Al Khatib Executive Director for Islamic Affairs - IACAD said more details will be announced in a Press conference next week.
