GCC panel for agriculture opens meet

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The 22nd two-day meeting of the GCC Technical Committee for Agriculture and Food Products Specifications Sector, hosted by the Environment Ministry's Specifications and Standards Department, opened here yesterday.

The Director of Standards and Metrology Management, Engineer Nawaf bin Ibrahim Al Hamad Al Mana, underlined in an inaugural speech the priority enjoyed by the food sector as one of the pillars of the economies of the GCC countries due to its direct impact on the lives of individuals and society. The achievement of food security is the basis of security in general, he said.

Food security could only be achieved by ensuring the sustainability of natural resources and bio-diversity. This is of strategic importance to the GCC states because of the challenges they face, the foremost of which is the scarcity of water resources, limited arable land and steady population growth.
