2026 World Cup on FIFA executive committee agenda

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The meeting of the FIFA executive committee started yesterday in Zurich with the bidding system for the 2026 World Cup and the so called triple punishment rule up for discussion.

However, the announcement of decisions is not expected until the conclusion of the meeting today.

The World Cup bidding process is to be reviewed following the recent controversies.

The triple punishment of a red card, a penalty kick and an automatic suspension for the next match for denying a goal-scoring opportunity is to be considered following a referral from the International Football Association Board meeting in February.

FIFA said that outgoing German executive member Theo Zwanziger was the only absentee from the 25-strong committee. On Friday Zwanziger will give up his position during the FIFA Congress to be replaced by current German Football Association president Wolfgang Niersbach.
