Kuwait- '7,000 Drug Addicts Under Treatment'

(MENAFN- Arab Times) Director of Drug Addiction Management Center Dr Adel Al-Zayed affirmed that 7,000 patients are currently registered at the center. He added the number of registered patients doesn't represent the total number of drug addicts in Kuwait since the majority of drug addicts are outside. He is expecting the number of patients to increase by 3,000 in the next two years, indicating the number of patients may increase to 10,000 for the reason that the center is improving in medical services, reports Al- Seyassah daily.

Dr Al-Zayed added the center has been transformed from a treatment center to a rehabilitation center and the treatment process known as "Detoxification" is the first step to rehabilitate the patients. He praised the decision taken by the Minister of Health Dr Ali Al- Obeidi to detach the center from Kuwait Mental Health Center saying "it is a positive step by which the required medical services will be provided".

Meanwhile, there are efforts to provide all necessary medical services in the center in coordination with concerned departments. He noted the center will be run by a team of medical personnel instead of leaving the task to the doctors alone. He reiterated the center is specialized in the treatment of drug addicts only, while the treatment of smokers is going on at the clinics affiliated to the National Program for Combating Smoking.
