122 Belgian fighters returned from Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Around 236 Belgians had left for Syria to fight against the Syrian regime, among whom 56 were killed and 122 returned to Belgium, a Belgian intelligence official stated Friday.

Belgium has one of the highest numbers of foreign fighters in Europe, taking into account the small population of the country of 11 million, Jaak Raes, head of the Belgian State Intelligence Service said in an interview with the Belgian VRT news network.

He explained that this high number was due to the campaign launched by the group Sharia4Belgium to recruit fighters.

"We think that this organization was able to convince many people to make the journey and to join ISIL," said Raes.
