New terrorist suspect arrested in Belgium

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A new suspect has been arrested in connection with investigation into a terrorist group operating from the city of Verviers, in south east Belgium, local media reported Saturday.

The Belgian news network VRT named the suspect as Karim A who has a Belgian passport.

He was taken into custody in Belgium on 30 March and is facing charges of taking part in the activities of a terrorist group. Examining magistrates decided that he has to stay behind bars for at least another month.

The anti-terror operation in Verviers took place on 15 January following information about a possible attack that was about to be carried out in Belgium. Police shot two men dead during house raids in Verviers, while seven others were arrested.

One suspect was released last week, but the man who is allegedly the brain of the Verviers terror cell, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, is still on the run. According to unconfirmed reports, he was reportedly hiding in Greece.
