Saudi- Rees Coupet chion in DHL Corporate Texas Scramble Golf tourney


(MENAFN- Arab News) Gordon Rees and Jean Marc Coupet emerged champion in the DHL Corporate Texas Scramble Golf Tournament 2015 held last Friday at Dirab Golf & Country Club.
Rees and Coupet with a 12 team handicap put together a winning score of 12-under 60 in benign conditions. They shot nines of 38-34 in a solid level par round of 72 where they mixed four birdies with the same number of bogeys.
After a bogey on 10 Rees and Coupet went even par coming in with a birdie on the 13th then picked up shots with birdies on 15 and 18. On the frontside they pulled one back with birdie on the ninth hole after going three over with bogeys on the fourth seventh and eighth holes.
Runners-up Richard Dunn and Bob Bruford finished one stroke back on 61 from a gross score of 68 and 7 handicap.
Starting on the 13th hole Dunn and Bruford carded nines of 36-32. In a bogeyless backnine Dunn and Bruford enjoyed birdies on the difficult No.10 and Nos. 12 13 and 17. They managed to sign for even par score going out by birdieing 9 following a bogey on 5.
The ladies pair of Susan Tessier and Hyejin Byoun with a combined handicap of 7 took third place on 63 while Paul Stanton and Dean Lewis clinched fourth place on countback from Saudi Omar Hariri and Ronny Lidman after the two teams tied on 64.
To break the tie backnine scores were compared and Stanton and Lewis tallied 34 to the 35 by Hariri-Lidman.
Lewis an accomplished golfer with a 1 handicap and Stanton actually returned the low gross of the day a 67 but then had the lowest team handicap of 3 among the winners. Lewis took the longest drive award for men with Liz Kennedy winning the same accolade for the ladies.
Ralf Schiffer nabbed the nearest to the pin plum.
While the first five winners won prizes of golf merchandise the raffle draw winners couldn't have asked for more: Bjarni Valtysson took home the grand raffle draw prize of complete Mizuno irons set James Schuler collected a Taylormade driver and Dunn a Titleist metal wood.
A total of 58 teams and 116 players participated in the two ball Texas Scramble format competition sponsored by DHL Express which became the third new company this year after Meem By GIB and Saudi Fransi Capital to join the growing list of corporate backers of Dirab Golf & Country that are taking the lead in the promotion of golf in Saudi Arabia.
Geoff Walsh country manager DHL Saudi Arabia joined the tournament and partnered with Saudi national team player Fahad Almansour. At the awards ceremony later in the day Walsh as chief guest handed out prizes to the winners. In his speech Walsh committed to support golf in the Kingdom. Hariri vice president Sales DHL Saudi Arabia and Dirab Golf Committee Chairman Tariq Javed were also present at the awarding.
