UNSC calls for "urgent" meeting on Yarmouk camp tragedy

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Security Council President Dina Kawar of Jordan called Monday members for "urgent" closed consultations following Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attacks on Syria's Yarmouk refugee camp.

During the closed consultations - the second urgent meeting on Middle East since Jordan held presidency - UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Commissioner General Pierre Krahenbuhl is to participate via videoconference.

With the deteriorating situation at Yarmouk camp, Krahenbuhl announced on his twitter account that they were able to provide life-saving assistance to just under 100 civilians, including women and children, who fled Yarmouk, and clarified that these families had escaped the camp after "an intense night of fighting." "We remain extremely alarmed by fate of civilians remaining in camp," he wrote.

Moreover, he called on all armed groups to spare civilians and to allow men, women and children to safely leave areas of fighting or be evacuated.

The UN commissioner cried out for an "international political action" to face the deadly situation at Yarmouk refugee camp.

"World political, religious and other leaders must act too," he added.

As the fighting intensifies, UNRWA also strongly appealed in a statement to all armed actors to cease hostilities that place civilians in acute danger and to withdraw immediately from civilian populated areas.

Since the beginning of this month, this residential area of Damascus where some 18,000 people have already been trapped for over two years has been engulfed by intense fighting.

The UNRWA also said that the lives of civilians in Yarmouk have never been more profoundly threatened.

For over a year now, the besieged inhabitants of Yarmouk, including 3,500 children, have been reliant on UNRWA's irregular distributions of food and other assistance.
