Pres. Abbas calls for not dragging Palestinian refugees into conflicts

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas called for not dragging Palestinian refugees at Syria's Yarmouk Refugee Camp in the region's current conflicts.

While inaugurating a public garden in Ramallah Sunday, Abbas said that "we urge those wanting to drag us in the conflicts to keep us away as we have been suffering and anguishing from many wars everywhere".

He added that there are ongoing contacts with officials to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian refugees.

The Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk, south of Damascus, has been hit by infighting involving all warring parties at the camp and "we pay the price", he said.

"We announced more than four years ago that we have not interfered in the internal affairs of any Arab country and therefore we reject any interference in our affairs. We have no relations with what is going on in Syria," he noted.

Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants have reportedly taken control of 90 percent of the Palestinian refugee camp as gun battles continued to rage between this group and various Palestinian groups throughout the camp since last Wednesday, Palestinian News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported late Saturday.

As for military operations in Yemen, Abbas reaffirmed the Palestinian Authority's support for the "Operation Decisive Storm" launched by the Saudi-led coalition against Yemen's Houthi militants aiming to restore the country's legitimacy.

Meanwhile, he referred to Palestine's recent accession to the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying the Palestinian leadership is considering deeply the issues of the illegal settlement policy of Israel and its war on the Gaza Strip last July and August to file suits against it to the ICC at the appropriate time.

"We don't have many options. We have to resort to the international legitimacy to get some of our rights," he pointed out.
