US 'won't back Iran deal that threatens Israel'

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The US would not sign on to an agreement over Iran's nuclear programme that would threaten Israel, the White House said yesterday.

Asked about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's demand that any final deal with Iran acknowledge his state's right to exist, White House spokesman Eric Schultz said he had not seen the request but was aware of Israel's concerns.

"We understand his position. The concerns we have with Iran outside of the nuclear programme remain just as vibrant ... yesterday as they are today."

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Tehran will honour the framework deal provided world powers hold up their end of the bargain. "We don't cheat. We are not two-faced. "If we've given a promise ... we will take action based on that promise. Of course, that depends on the other side taking action on their promises too," he said in a televised address.

In Paris, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius warned that the tricky issue of when crippling sanctions would be lifted was "not yet solved." "The Iranian want sanctions to be lifted immediately," he told Europe 1 radio station. "We will ease sanctions as you respect what you have agreed to and if you don't live up to your commitments, of course, we can return to the situation we had before.
