UN chief congratulates Nigerian President on election

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon took note of the results of the Nigerian presidential and parliamentary elections announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ban congratulated President-elect Major General (Rtd) Muhammadu Buhari and commended President Jonathan for his leadership throughout the electoral process and his statesmanship in upholding the democratic process, said a statement released by his press office.

Moreover, Ban applauded the INEC for having organized and carried out the elections in a professional manner under challenging circumstances, and called on all Nigerians to accept the outcome of the elections.

The statement noted that Ban also appealed to them to address any complaints they may have through existing legal and constitutional channels.

The Secretary-General believes the successful conduct of these polls is a testament to the maturity of Nigeria's democracy, it added.

Nevertheless, the UN Chief hoped that the same democratic spirit will prevail in the conduct of the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections on April 11.

Ban condemned earlier this week the attacks reportedly carried out by Boko Haram and others who have attempted to disrupt the polling process, and was encouraged by the determination and resilience shown by the Nigerian people in pressing forward and exercising their civic duties in the face of unjustifiable violence. \
