U.S. begins airstrikes against Daesh in Tikrit

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) At Iraq's request, the United States began airstrikes in Tikrit in support of a stalled Iraqi ground offensive to retake the city from Daesh terrorist fighters, a senior U.S. official said.

An Associated Press correspondent in Tikrit reported hearing warplanes overhead late Wednesday, followed by multiple explosions.

The offensive to retake the city has been stalled for more than a week and American officials on Wednesday said they began the strikes after the Iraqi government formally requested help.

These strikes are intended to destroy Daesh strongholds with precision, thereby saving innocent Iraqi lives and minimizing damage to civilian structures, the officials added.
