Saudi- Care needed for happy hands
(MENAFN- Arab News) After years of cleaning dishwashing and exposure to the sun many women have developed a revealing sign of aging that isn't on their face it is their hands. It is said that hands can show your real age more than your face.
The reason why hands age quickly is that they are exposed to sunlight high temperatures and plenty of water. According to dermatologist Laila Jabbar by the age of 30 skin cells decrease by 10 percent making the skin less efficient at repairing itself. 'The top layer of the hand is very thin and is able to show signs of age first unlike the thicker skinned often under cover palms' she said.
The skin on your hands gets dry and dehydrated with time. 'Excessive hand washing and using harsh and chemical cleaning products without gloves can speed up the process' said Jabbar. 'Choose a cream based soup that contains moisturizers that will leave your hands soft and won't strip skin of natural protective oils. Also remember to use warm water when washing because hot water dries the skin faster' she added.
As you grow older collagen and elastin begin to fade over time. 'Wrinkles will start to appear and the skin will lose its elasticity. Exposing your skin to the sun speeds up this progression and can contribute to a leathery texture and even skin cancer' said Jabbar. 'You can treat rough skin with a homemade olive oil and sugar scrub mixture. You can do this by mixing together quarter teaspoon of sugar and olive oil and massage into the backs of hands to scrub at least once a week. Olive oil is a great source of moisturizing and omega3 fatty acids and sugar rubs away rough patches' she added.
One of the best ways to help prevent skin cancer dark spots wrinkles and lines is to use a hand cream with at least SPF 25. 'After the age of 30 the body starts to produce less oil which is one of the reasons why nails can become dry and break easily. Pigmentation spots crop up after overexposure to UV light' said Jabbar. 'Spots that look like freckles were once thought to be caused by liver dysfunction hence the name liver spots. There are now specific diets to follow and a certain hand cream to apply which your doctor will tell you about' she added.
Those who have super dry hands should look for the same ingredients they use for their complexion. 'Lotions should be rich in lactic acid hydrating urea and exfoliating alpha hydroxyl acids that will keep skin moist and soft. Smooth on the lotion after washing hands at night to seal in the moisture' says Jabbar.
Wellkept goodlooking and soft hands are very important especially for women. 'Hands are able to tell you how you lead your life and can reflect on how you take care of your body and skin. Dressing up in elegant clothes is of no use if you do not take care of your hands and feet. When talking to other people you use your hands to express yourself and emphasize a point' said Jabbar. 'Hands play an important role in communication. Imagine what life would be like without your hands. It is a part of the body that you use the most you cook with them get dressed with them write with them empathize with them and shake others' hands when you meet them' she added.
