Qatar- Al Naeem residents complain about lack of basic facilities

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Residents of Al Naeem in north of Doha, are complaining about slow implementation of basic infrastructure projects like sewage and drainage networks, health centres, street lights and commercial markets.

Al Naeem is among the oldest neighbourhoods of Doha and for 20 years it has been relying mostly on civic tankers to remove sewage as there are no proper sewage networks, said Rashid Abdullah Al Nuaimi, a citizen who lives in the area.

Civic tankers pull into homes and sometimes don't complete the job. People are forced to use cars to remove sewage. It is high time authorities provided the facility," he said. During rains, he said, the area is flooded in the absence of proper drainage networks.

Residents also complained about the absence of commercial markets. One resident said they rely on grocery stores or go to neighbouring areas where there are such markets to buy their daily needs, reports local Arabic daily Al Raya.

There are also very few lamp-posts on streets and many internal roads have no lights and the areas become dark at night, Al Nuaimi said.

The Supreme Council of Health has completed a health centre but it is yet to open to the public. Mohammed Rashid Al Nuaimi, another Qatari resident of the area, said people are forced to travel long distances for healthcare and asked authorities to open up the centre at the earliest.

He said they also want a wedding hall as they are forced to pitch tents in open areas for such ceremonies.

He said residents are also waiting for the Supreme Education Council to open a kindergarten. Most children currently go to private kindergartens which are expensive and some of them below standards, he said.

Mohammed said speed-breakers on many streets do not conform to security and safety standards. "Some are very high and damage cars. Authorities should build uniform speed-breakers," he added.
