(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Greek leftist leader Alexis Tsipras was sworn in on Monday as prime minister before President Karolos Papoulias after his Radical Coalition of the Left (Syriza) swept to victory in the parliamentary elections.
The Ministry of Interior has earlier today announced the final results of the Sunday polls with Syriza winning 36.34 percent of the votes or 149 of the 300 seats of parliament.
The New Democracy Party of the outgoing Prime Minister Antonis Samaras came in the second place with 27.81 percent of votes and 76 seats, followed by the far-right Golden Dawn Party - 6.28 percent and 17 seats, and centrist the River - 6.05 percent and 17 seats.
The Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Greece (KKE) got 5.47 percent of votes and 15 seats, the Independent Greeks (ANEL) - 4.75 percent and 13 seats, and the Panhellenic Socialist Movement - 4.68 percent and 13 seats.
Panos Kammenos, leader of the right-wing conservative ANEL, has earlier announced coalition with Syriza to form a parliamentary bloc of 40 percent or 151 seats, which represents the quorum forming a coalition government.
Speaking to reporters after his talks with Tsipras, Kammenos said: "We give our vote of confidence to (the new) Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras." Consequently Tsipras was sworn in as the country's new prime minister and immediately started forming the coalition government.
The cabinet line-up, to be announced later today, faces the challenge of reversing austerity policies and negotiating with European leaders to reduce country's debt burden.
