Saudi- SCTA restoring40 historicalbuildings
(MENAFN- Arab News) Nearly 40 buildings are currently being restored in old Jeddah as part of plans to transform the area into a tourist destination said Mohammed Al-Omari of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA).
He said significant developments are under way in the area noting that the number of restoration licenses issued by the Jeddah municipality this year exceeds those of previous years. According to Al-Omari the recognition of old Jeddah as a UNESCO world heritage site and the increased support of the municipality and governorate has motivated homeowners to participate in the development. He said plans include transforming old historic buildings into restaurants hotels shops and other attractive tourist sites.
'Two historic buildings in the area will be rehabilitated as part of the plan in the coming days' he said adding that the SCTA has also transformed one of the old buildings in the district into its permanent office.
Talal Abdullah Samarkandi head of committee of engineering offices at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry said a comprehensive strategic plan has been developed to address fires and other risks faced by buildings in old Jeddah.
