Thousands Learn about Steamfitting Trade through Educational Videos
Steamfitters YouTube Channels Spark Awareness of Industry
The New York-based Enterprise Association of Steamfitters Local Union 638 launched two YouTube channels in March 2014 to educate and inform audiences about the steamfitting and mechanical contracting trade the uniqueness of the union’s 5-year apprenticeship program its diverse membership and its positive overall impact on the New York’s real estate economy. It has since uploaded 10 different videos and attracted more than 5500 viewers 10000 minutes watched and 37 channel subscribers.
Averaging about one new video every month the short film topics include: Women in Steamfitting Helmets to Hardhats program the Steamfitters Local 638 five year apprenticeship program Construction Skills the modernization of the Penn South complex and more.
“Steamfitters 638 Apprentice Honored for Rescuing Four NYPD Officers” is the most recent video that features Steamfitters apprentice Juan Lopez who sprang into action in March 2014 when four NYPD officers were trapped by a car crash that incinerated two vehicles including the unmarked police cruiser carrying plainclothes officers. Mr. Lopez is shown accepting an award from the Office of the New York City Public Advocate.
The most popular video with more than 1300 views “Five Years of Training to Become a Steamfitter” features a live broadcast recording from the union’s training center in Long Island City. In the video Local 638 President Pat Dolan and Business Agent at Large Richard Roberts discuss the five-year apprenticeship program that encourages New York youth to enter the construction trade while earning respectable wages and benefits as well as the Helmets to Hardhats training program that creates jobs for returning U.S. Military veterans.
