Prices of fish soar in Ras Al Khaimah on weekends

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  Despite the over 60 per cent drop in fish rates in Ras Al Khaimah over the last two weeks, prices rose sharply during the weekend.

Residents here have complained about the unreasonable hike affirming that the supply of fish is very high due to the stable weather conditions, but greedy traders insist on creating a crisis.

"How can 1kg of Hamour now cost Dh40 though it was available just two days back for Dh15," said Abu Mohammed, Jordanian.

Calling for a stringent control on the fish markets in the emirate, Abu Saeed, Emirati, said fish traders exploit customers' pressing demand during the weekend and unreasonably increase the prices.

"They hike the fish prices four times and even more though it is available, and they did not exert much effort to fish."

Fish sellers, in reply, attributed the hike to the pressing demand due to employees coming home to the emirate to spend the weekend with their families. "There is actually plenty of fish and the weather is very nice, but it is business; a matter of supply and demand," said Abu Salim, a fish seller.

Abu Salim said the prices of other types of fish have slightly increased. "These include Durman which has risen from Dh3 to Dh5, Khabat from Dh25 to Dh30, and Sheiri from Dh20 to Dh25."

Abdullah Al Khadr, a controller at the Muairidh Fish Market, said large amounts of fish are available at all fish markets in the emirate due to the stable weather. "However, prices regularly go crazy during weekends, and that is not acceptable."

"The price of 1kg of shark increased from Dh20 to Dh30 while a Zina, weighing 5kg, costs Dh120 instead of Dh90 or Dh100 during the middle of the week."
