Municipalities ministry receives 31 machines from Japan

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)  The Ministry of Municipal Affairs, on Sunday, received at Al Zarqa free zone 31 municipal machines as part of the third installment of a Japanese grant to Jordan.

The Minister of Municipal Affairs, Walid Masri, said that the Syrian refugees living in all cities and regions of the Kingdom have placed more burdens on the municipalities and pressure on the services they provide.

Masri pointed out that Japan is one of the countries providing the maximum assistance to Jordan to deal with the aftermath of the Syrian crisis, and appealed to international donors to provide aid to the Kingdom.

Japanese Ambassador Shunichi Sakurai said that the Japanese grant, which was signed earlier this year, amounted to about $10 million. It was earmarked to provide about 103 different machines to cover all governorates of the Kingdom, he said, noting that this batch included 31 waste disposal machines and tanks provided to 31 municipalities.

"We hope that this grant contributes to the better performance of all of Jordan's municipalities for the benefit of citizens and reflects on the cities' sanitation levels," the Japanese ambassador added.

Zarqa Mayor Imad Momani said that municipalities desperately need help and assistance to meet the repercussions caused by Syrian refugees, who are spread in all municipalities of the Kingdom.

The director of the Free Zone Corporation, Marwan Al Qudah, said it was obvious to everyone that Jordan has limited natural resources and faces economic problems but consistently maintained a positive humanitarian stance, indicating because of Jordan's location in the heart of the region, the successive waves of refugees it received have added to the burden that the Kingdom is shouldering.
