Dubai: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched an awareness campaign targeting motorists to sensitise them about the added importance of safe driving during rainy or foggy conditions.

Maitha bint Udai CEO of RTA Traffic and Road Agency called upon motorists to be more cautious and attentive during the coming days and weeks which have the potential of higher road accidents due to wet roads during the winter.

“The awareness campaign which started this month focuses on a number of tips which will help motorists avoid traffic accidents triggered by climatic conditions and vagaries” said Bint Udai.

“It is very crucial for the driver especially during rainy weather to leave an extra (safe) distance from the vehicle moving in front and to be prepared for sudden braking as well. Also he or she should drive at a reasonable speed not exceeding the prescribed speed limit of the road. The driver has to avoid any kinds of distractions while driving such as looking at the mobile phones etc and should ensure that his vehicle’s window glass and mirrors are clean she said.

“The campaign will use electronic and smart channels such as social media display monitors at customer service centres mall screens advertising screens at petrol stations and awareness flashes at websites and media channels to communicate its relevant awareness messages. Such messages will be bilingual (Arabic & English) in order to reach out to the largest possible number of motorists and the public as well” said Bint Udai.

“An awareness leaflet highlighting the importance of safe driving during weather vagaries will be distributed to truck drivers at Al Awir and Jebel Ali as well as at RTA’s customer service centres. The awareness messages focus on alerting motorists about the extra precautions of driving under rainy conditions where more attention and caution needs to be exercised as high speeds on slippery roads can lead to accidents as the vehicle may skid and veer out of the driver’s control” she said.

Bint Udai urged motorists to inspect their vehicles and have them properly maintained especially the headlights wipers tyres and brakes as these play a crucial role in the driver’s visibility and his control over the wheel.
