Saudi- Unemployed father brands children over missing SR100

(MENAFN- Arab News) The Department of Social Protection in Jeddah took up a recent case of domestic abuse in which nine siblings between 3 and 18 years of age were branded by their father with a hot skewer after SR100 went missing from their home.

The administration of a girls' high school discovered the injuries when the principal noticed that the eldest daughter was not wearing the school's mandatory shoes due to painful wounds in her feet. The school notified the Department of Social Protection which addressed the issue and began providing psychological and social support to the girls.

According to the eldest daughter the father used a red-hot skewer to brand all the siblings across their feet last Wednesday with the exception of a three-month-old baby. A source at the Department of Social Protection in Jeddah said the girls were transferred from their school to King Fahd Hospital for treatment and examination.

Investigations revealed that the mother of the girls works at a local school in Jeddah while the father is unemployed. The whole family survives on the mother's meager SR3000 monthly wage. The mother feigned ignorance of domestic abuse out of fear that the man will ask for a divorce and she will lose the custody of her children.

A source close to the case revealed that the girls will be provided with lodging and the department will take necessary steps to monitor their case and ensure they are no longer subjected to violence.

The eldest daughter said she is prepared to live with her mother but does not want to go back to her father as he treats them harshly and regularly uses hot objects to brand them. She said this behavior has in the past led her sisters to leave home and refuse to return for several days.
