Oman's Gypsum Exports Rise to 3.38 Million Tonnes
(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Muscat November 17 (QNA) - Gypsum exports from the Sultanate of Oman in the first nine months of 2014 increased steeply to 3.38 million tonnes up from 1.99 million tonnes registered in 2013.
Citing Port Salalah data an Oman Daily Observer report said exports of the gray mineral are expected to surpass 4.50 million tonnes before the end of 2014.
India is main importer of Omani gypsum. India's cement industry growing at an annual rate of 8 to 10% spurs demand for gypsum.
Gypsum's property to control hardening rate of cement makes it a vital element. It comprises 5% of the raw material mix used in cement production.
India's total cement production capacity reaches 350 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). Analysts project this capacity to nearly triple to 950 mtpa by 2027. The country's strong economic and infrastructure growth spurs this demand for cement.
India currently faces deficit in cement-grade gypsum which threatens to increase production costs. the report said citing a study published by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). (QNA)
