Thousands of Catalans call for early elections in Barcelona protest

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency)  Tens of thousands of Catalans demonstrated in Barcelona on Sunday demanding that leader Artur Mas call early regional elections within three months.

Earlier this month Mas cancelled an independence referendum planned
for November 9 and said that the north-eastern Spanish region would
instead hold an alternative vote on the same date to determine the
level of support for secession.

He said then that there was no legal support for the referendum,
which was suspended by Spain's Constitutional Court after the
government contested it.

Police said about 110,000 people participated in Sunday's rally.

In September, Mas had signed a decree to allow the wealthy region
with more than 7.5 million inhabitants to vote in a non-binding
referendum.
