Arab FMs to meet on Palestine, Syria, joint action


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Arab Foreign Ministers will meet in Cairo on Sunday for their 142nd session, to be headed by Mauritanian Foreign Minister Ahmad Ould Tekdi, to discuss issues relevant to Arab joint action.

The meeting agenda, prepared by the permanent delegates over the past two days, includes 72 items, topped with a draft resolution on the Arab political, economic and social joint action and the developments of the Palestinian cause.

Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby will take part in the discussions.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will attend a special session to review the future Palestinian plan on the world arena seeking an end to the Israeli occupation and the aggression on the Palestinian people.

Abbas will discuss a political plan that seeks provision of international protection for the Palestinians, hoping for a resolution by the UN Security Council (UNSC) to end the occupation on basis of a two-state settlement. The plan also demands holding a meeting for the countries signatories of the 4th Geneva Convention, to apply it on Israel.

Meanwhile, head of the Syrian Opposition Coalition Hani Al-Bahra, will address the meeting on the recent developments at home, but not from the Syria seat.

Developments in Iraq and means of countering the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) will also feature high on the meeting agenda, as well as activating the Arab joint defense to respond to terrorist organizations and groups posing a threat to the Arab national security.

The meeting will also discuss the Libya crisis in light of the deterioration of security conditions in the country, together with supporting the national dialogue in the Sudan. Developments in Somalia and Yemen and the issue of Iran's occupation of the three UAE islands, Abu Moussa, Greater and Lesser Tunbs islands, will also be addressed.

On the agenda also is the issue of reforming the Arab League.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterre and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Commissioner General, Pierre Krahenbuhl will address the meeting on the conditions of the refugee and the support required to meet their needs.

Prior to the foreign ministers' meeting, the follow up committee of the implementation of Arab Summit resolutions will meet on the ministerial level, to be headed by Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. The six member states, Kuwait, Egypt, Qatar, Morocco, Mauritania and Libya, are taking part.

The morning follow-up meeting will discuss the bi-annual report by Kuwait and the League's General Secretariat on the implementation of the resolutions taken by the last Arab Summit held in Kuwait in March.
