Saudi- Two underage marriage cases banned in Taif

(MENAFN- Arab News) The national society of human rights (nshr) recently prevented the marriage procedures of two underage girls who were getting married to older men in taif region nshr representative in taif province adil al-thibaiti told local media.

he said the nshr had earlier received a notification from the relatives of the two underage girls and worked jointly with other parties including the police and the social protection committee to stop the marriages.

talking to the media he said one of the girls aged 11 was going to get married to a man over 75 years old.

'there will never be any conformity in this case in terms of age culture and other considerations which would be very unfair for the girl. therefore it was necessary to halt this and the other marriage which has a similar case" al-thibaiti said.

in a related development the nshr succeeded in helping a battered young girl 14 years of age to her divorced mother. the girl had suffered burns and was denied education by her stepmother forcing her to flee the house and seek refuge with one of her relatives he was quoted as saying.

the nshr is working hard to eliminate the social evil of child marriages owing to the numerous negative consequences that these alliances have on the health and well-being of the underage girls.
