Belgium voices concern over future of Mideast peace process

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Belgian foreign minister Didier Reynders Sunday expressed "extreme concern" after Israel decided to stop talks with the Palestinian Authority in the aftermath of Fatah-Hamas reconciliation. Reynders in a statement warned that recent developments "could endanger the continuation of the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians to approach the deadline of 29 April 2014." He called on the Israeli and Palestinian sides to take responsibility and to stay focused on the peace talks. "Negotiations remain the best way for a final agreement on all final status issues. Everyone should refrain from taking measures to undermine trust between the parties and endanger the viability of the solution of two states," he said. Reynders recalled the European support for intra-Palestinian reconciliation behind President Abbas leadership based on the principles outlined in his speech of May 4, 2011. "Any new Palestinian government will thus necessarily respect the principle of non-violence and stay engaged in for a peaceful negotiated settlement, recognizing Israel and accepting previous agreements and obligations," he added.
