Austria freezes 18 Ukrainian bank accounts

Date:

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Austria has frozen 18 Ukrainian accounts in domestic banks at the behest of the new government in Kiev, it was learned here on Friday

The account holders are suspected of human rights violations in the course of the violent power struggle on the streets of Ukraine for the past few months, or of corruption. This was according to the Austrian foreign ministry

The Ukrainian government gave exact reasons for why each of the 18 accounts should be frozen. It presumably sent a similar request to Switzerland, said the Austrian ministry. The EU has decided on sanctions against government members of the former President Viktor Janukovich, who has fled to Russia after being ousted. However, there are no specifics about sanctions or who exactly will be affected by them yet.

On Thursday, Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz called on the members of the new government to be mindful of human rights. "I strongly recommend that our Ukrainian partners to fulfil their obligations when new laws are being made," he said in a letter to diplomats representing the 47 member states of the Council of Europe, which includes Ukraine
