A power cable technician has been sentenced to three years in jail by the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court after he was found guilty of abusing his post and stealing power cables worth Dh75,000 from the company he worked for. The court ordered the convict to repay his company Dh75,000 in value of the stolen power cables, and he was fined the same amount.

The accused is to be deported after serving his jail term.

According to court records, a company specialising in power cables informed the Abu Dhabi Prosecution on Financial Crimes that one of its employees abused his position and stole cables from a power station.

Eye-witnesses said the accused went to the power station with unidentified persons in a truck, which belonged to the company, and loaded it with a large number of power cables. They then fled the scene.

The company discovered the theft later and managed to locate the truck through a tracking device installed in the truck.

After initially claiming that the stolen cables cost Dh180,000, the company changed its estimate to Dh75,000. The technician had denied the charges in court. —
