Qatar Stars League: Seven matches today

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Qatar Stars League (QSL) has scheduled a round of matches for today, as a result of a congested fixture list later in the season

Due to the involvement of QSL clubs in the AFC Champions League and GCC competitions throughout February, March and April the league management has decided to play all seven Week 17 matches in one day

While this is an unusual step in the football calendar, the QSL Executive Committee has decided this is the best option to accommodate all teams who are involved in other competitions

"This is an unusual step for the QSL especially when we already have fixtures scheduled in the usual weekend slot," said Hani Ballan, Deputy CEO of the QSL

"After careful consideration of the fixture calendar for the rest of the season, we felt there was no alternative than to play these games this week

"While we are happy our clubs are involved in other competitions, this throws up challenges in respect of scheduling matches. We hope the fans, media and our sponsors understand and co-operate.

Lekhiwya and Eljaish are both involved in the AFC Champions League play-offs in February. Should they succeed, they would join Al Rayyan and Al Sadd in the group stages of the competition

QSL also have to consider the impact of Al Kharaitiyat and Al Khor's involvement in the GCC Cup € which again reduces alternative match-days throughout the season.

Due to the fact Match Day 1 of the AFC Champions League falls on February 25th-26th and the International match between Qatar v Bahrain falls on March 5th, there were be on QSL matches February or March 1st

There will also be no QSL matches on March 14 and 15 as a result of the AFC Champions League Match Days Two and Three
