Date:

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Joint teams of officers from the Anti-Narcotics Departments of the Dubai and Sharjah Police have arrested one of the leading members of a notorious drug trafficking gang - seizing more than Dh500,000 worth of heroin from him. The 40-year-old trafficker, who is residing in the UAE illegally, was arrested in Sharjah on September 29, after the police received reliable information that he was involved in drug-related activities in the UAE. It was later discovered by the officers that the man was exploiting his own relatives and friends, by forcing them to promote and distribute drugs ۬to known drug addicts in ۬the country. The man managed to evade detection for some time as he was very careful in his dealings, an official said. After verifying the information given to them by an unidentified source, and after obtaining the permission from the legal authorities, the police ambushed the man while he was on a street near Musala. The suspect was taken by surprise as the joint team cordoned off the area next to the Etisalat building in Sharjah and arrested him. A police official at the General Department of Anti-Narcotics of the Dubai Police described the arrest as "important" as the arrested man is one of the most dangerous drug traffickers in the country. Upon his arrest, the police managed to seize a number of capsules from him containing pure heroin. Later, upon interrogation, he confessed to the police that he was in possession of more heroin. He revealed that he hid huge quantities of the drug under some waste material in a deserted house in Sharjah. He kept the drugs in this specific location to keep some of his relatives in the dark about his illegal activities. He also said, if the police raided his apartment, only a small quantity of drugs would be found in his possession. The police raided the house and seized the heroin, valued at Dh500,000. He has been referred to the competent authorities for further legal action and charged with possession of narcotics and psychotropic substances and trafficking and promoting drugs. The police official praised the Dubai and Sharjah Police Anti-Narcotics teams for their vigilance, and rapid movement in carrying out their duties, with a high sense of responsibility.
