Bahrain's Al Khalifa commutes 4 death sentences of 4 people

(MENAFN) Four death sentences that included three civilians and one soldier have been commuted by Bahrain's king.

The state-run Bahrain News Agency reported King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa's decision Thursday just as the men stood posed to be executed after losing their last appeal.

The men now will serve life sentences after being convicted of plotting to assassinate a military official.

Manama has gone to great lengths to clamp down on any sign of dissent. On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were deployed to assist Bahrain in its crackdown. Scores of people have lost their lives and hundreds of others sustained injuries or got arrested as a result of the Al-Khalifah regime's crackdown.
