Pakistan- Senate passes resolution for stopping new delimitations in FATA

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: The Senate on Monday passed a resolution for holding the general elections in FATA under old constituencies.

Senator from Kurram Agency Sajjad Turi had filed the resolution in the Upper House of the Parliament which also had signatures of 11 other senators. The resolution sought stopping the new delimitations in the tribal areas for the next general elections.

Sajjad Turi said population census could not be carried out in FATA properly due to prevailing conditions there. He said a large number of displaced people haven't returned to FATA yet and they were not counted in the population. He said an assurance was given to the tribal senators that all the displaced people will be counted in the FATA population, but it did not happen.

The PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar said it is not mandatory under the Constitution to hold elections in FATA according to population.

The MQM's Sehr Kamran also said new delimitations should not be carried out till removal of reservations.

Senator Usman Kakar said the actual population of FATA is 150 million, while it is shown as 50 million in the census.

However, the government opposed the resolution, arguing that the cabinet has decided to hold polls in FATA under old constituencies.
