Iraq: 27 killed in IS attack

(MENAFN) Islamic state fighters ambushed a convoy of government-led troops near the northern city of Kirkuk on Sunday, killing at least 27 of them, police and leaders of the Shi'ite Popular Forces said on Monday.

The Islamic state claimed responsibility for the attack and a security official said Iraqi forces were hunting Islamic state fighters disguised in police uniforms for the attack.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi condemned the deaths and ordered the security forces to arrest those responsible for their deaths to be brought to justice.

"We extend our condolences to the families of the martyrs who were killed by the Popular Popular Authority," he said in a statement. "We confirm the issuance of orders to prosecute the perpetrators and the punishment of them."
